Know your network!

It's pretty common knowledge that there are four major carriers here in the US of A. These four major carriers, T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint, dominate the cellular airwaves across the states. Each carrier has its own physical towers that operate each of their cellular networks. They sell phones that are locked to their cellular networks, as well as other phones that will work across all networks. The phones that are unlocked to all cellular networks are paid off in full when buying the device.

There's a large population of people who do not have any of the major carriers as their cellular provider. A lot of people have what is known as an MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) provider, and there are quite a few of these networks. These MVNO providers use network coverage from the four major providers for there own networks. This is where knowing your network is important because your MVNO provider is more than likely not compatible with all four of the major carriers. For instance, if your MVNO provider uses the cellular network for Verizon a Sprint, T-Mobile, and AT&T device is not going to work for cellular service.
